Meet Our New Chief Financial Officer: Tajinder Sandhu

We would like to give a warm welcome to our new Chief Financial Officer, Tajinder Sandhu! Tajinder joined the Operance family a few months ago and is working closely with our leadership team on a part time basis.

We interviewed Tajinder about his first couple of months, have a read below:

Have you felt welcome and involved since joining the business?

Yes, I’ve been made to feel very welcome, especially considering we work remotely as a business and I work part-time hours. Thanks again for putting in the time and effort into making me feel welcome.

Is there anything we could have improved on during your starting period?

No, everything has been as expected given my part-time nature. Operance has done really well with the induction period process considering we are all remote.

What are you most excited about moving forwards?

I am excited about watching the company grow and scale. I am also looking forward to helping with the fundraisers and charity events in future. I also look forward to getting involved with the company’s social events.

What was it that drew you to the role?

The business is solving an important problem by helping to develop a solution that could avoid issues like the Grenfell Tower. This aligns heavily with my core values and means that I can dedicate my time to the business whilst receiving fullfillment within the role.

Is the role what you thought it would be?

Yes, the role is everything I expected after originally speaking with Ian, Nigel and the team. I’ve worked as a CFO for a few technology companies which has helped me get stuck in. I am looking forward to continuing to develop the role over the coming years.

What do you enjoy doing outside of Operance?

Outside of Operance, I study jujitsu, piano and history on a part-time basis, which I am hoping to make into a degree. I have children and a German Shepherd, all of which take up a lot of my spare time! Quite rightfully so! smile

In Summary

That concludes our interview with Tajinder! We would like to once again wish him a warm welcome to the business. We look forward to working with him on a long-term basis and are excited to see what the future brings with Tajinder onboard.

Meet Our New Product Marketing Manager: James Spindler

We would like to welcome our new Product Marketing Manager, James Spindler, to the Operance family! James joined the business a few months ago and is already making an impact. Working closely with our Chief Product Officer and marketing department, James is here to ensure that our OM software continues to provide value to the community.

We interviewed James about his induction period, have a read below!

How have you found your first few weeks at Operance?

I have enjoyed every second of the journey so far. I have an amazing group of colleagues, and together, we are shaping the future of Operance’s sales and marketing.

What’s your background, and how did this lead to working with Operance?

I have a broad background in IT/Marketing and originally started my career as a first and second line support analyst for Hewlett Packard. I realised that I wanted to do more and express myself in other areas, which lead to my career in marketing.

I have had the pleasure of working in a multitude of industries, ranging from hospitality to finance. I have also had a few start-up businesses that allowed me to get a true grasp of business as a whole, which I feel was an invaluable experience. I have decided that I want to focus on real estate related industries that bring true product value to the market. This is where I discovered Operance and the incredibly valuable services that are available, ranging from BIM to digitised O&M solutions.

What was it that drew you to the role?

It was the business, branding and product. Operance’s business morals align with perfectly my own, which makes it a great business to be a part of. Additionally, the product brings true value to the market which I feel is imperative to a long term successful business strategy.

Product marketing is a vital area of marketing as it connects the brand to its customers, shaping the product behind their feedback.

What are you most looking forward to about working at Operance?

I am mainly looking forward to leaving my mark and watching the business and brand grow long term. I believe that Operance will continue to be the leading provider of digitised O&M services as the industry matures.

Furthermore, I am looking forward to seeing the Golden Thread legislation come into fruition so that we can guarantee safer buildings and properties for everyone.

What Does the Product Marketing Role entail?

That is a good question! Product marketing splits into multiple areas depending on where there is a disconnect between the user and the product itself. This disconnect might be part of the customer journey or when using the product for the first time as a brand new user; both are important when ensuring we provide value to the industry and market our product correctly.

Furthermore, moving away from the product and focussing more on the marketing element. I am here to align the audience with the product and generate demand through the inbound routes that we are using. I work closely with our Inbound Marketing Manager and Sales Department; to ensure that these routes align with our audience as best we can and deliver the correct message.

How do you plan to make an impact on the product, our users and our business?

In my opinion, the best way of making an impact is by putting myself into the user’s shoes and experiencing the same journey as they do. I am working closely with the Chief Product Officer and Development Team; to evolve our platform and shape it around the pre and post-occupation stages of a building’s cycle. This development includes areas of extreme importance, such as developing high-standard golden thread features and ensuring we are making the best use of the Building Fire and Safety Acts for everyone.

The building industry is continually evolving, and we plan to continue developing our product with it. You can expect multiple product phases as we continue to shape our platform around the user and the industries need. I plan to help Operance continue to be a thought-leader and product leader in this industry, so that we can do our part in maintaining propper building safety standards for everyone.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Where do I start!?…

I collect Pokemon cards, nostalgia related items and digital assets! I also love to play games, experience nature and watch eSports, which is a rapidly growing online industry. After spending many years behind PC screens, I love to go on walks, spend time outside and load up on vitamin D outside of the UK.

I have a genuine interest in learning, so also enjoy watching documentaries and reading books. Knowledge is power, and I believe that!

In Summary

That concludes our interview with James! We would like to once again wish him a warm welcome to the business. We look forward to working with him on a long-term basis and are excited to see what the future brings with him onboard.

…Operance is growing rapidly so keep an eye out for our next new starter article! smile

The Fifth Anniversary Of Grenfell Tower: What Progress Has Been Made

Today is the fifth anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire, a tragedy that shook the whole of the United Kingdom, if not the entire world. There is an ongoing enquiry to help bring a bit of clarity and justice to those who were affected. The question is: What progress has been made over the last five years to ensure this doesn’t happen again? Have a read below.

The Building Safety Bill Became Law

The ‘Building Safety Act 2020′ received royal assent on 28th April 2022 after months of debate and amendments. This new law is in place to ‘create lasting generational change’ to the way high risk and residential buildings are constructed and maintained.

Currently, the law applies to buildings at least 18 metres high or at least seven storeys tall with two residential units. It also applies to care homes and hospitals that meet the same height threshold during the design and construction phases. More building types may be added to this law in future. You can read more here.

The Golden Thread Initiative

As some of our readers may already know from our previous articles, Operance is honored to be involved and participate in the national Golden Thread Initiative (GTI)The initiative aims to improve how we manage building information by providing the entire lifecycle of a building’s information in a digital format, or, the ‘Golden Thread’ as it is referred to.

The Golden Thread Initiative (GTI) sponsored by The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) – formerly the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), consists of a group of industry professional partners, that will participate in a short, intense collaborative project to achieve three key aims:

  1. Build a prototype of a standardised digital Golden Thread.
  2. Produce the information requirements and process maps for building safety information.
  3. Produce a report that will be published for industry detailing the GTI’s work.

As described by the government, The Golden Thread is both:

  • The information about a building that allows someone to understand a building and keep it safe, and

  • The information management to ensure the information is accurate, easily understandable, can be accessed by those who need it and is up to date.

It will be the duty of the people responsible for a building to put in place and maintain a golden thread of information. Having a golden thread will mean that those people responsible will have easily accessible, reliable, up to date and accurate information. Without this information, it is very difficult to manage buildings safely.

Implementation of the golden thread will require individuals and organisations responsible for a building to have good information management systems and a clear understanding of how information management supports building safety. Going forward the information management for safety will need to be embedded across the sector.

Deciphering who is responsible for the Golden Thread depends on whether the tenants have moved into the building or whether the building is still in development. You can watch our quick explanatory video on the Golden Thread below.

Did You Know?

In order to organise and store the golden thread information effectively, we have developed the Operance App. Our software enables you to manage your projects in the cloud, including building information, operations and maintenance, supply chain, and more. Find out more by visiting here.

The BRAC Golden Thread Project

The Building Regulations Advisory Committee (BRAC) have approved the formal definition of the Golden Thread. The official definition was shared online and in summary, covers the information, documents and information management processes used to support building safety. Official government advice is available to read on their website here.

BIM4HAs (BIM for Housing Associations)

The National Housing Federation and UK BIM Alliance have been working on a joint project to develop an exemplar set of documents and guidance, to support Housing Associations implementing digital asset management.

BIM4HAs have a toolkit and a supporting forum available for people to use. The toolkit is free to download and provides associations with the opportunity to innovate and lead. You can find out more information here.

Golden Thread Software Research & Development

As mentioned above, the Golden Thread is the thread of building safety information in a digital format. This information contains accurate and up-to-date records of building data which spans the entire lifecycle of old and new facilities.

Operance has been working hard behind the scenes over the last two years to design and build a solution to the Golden Thread. In order to execute the Golden Thread effectively, the need for a platform to define, curate, access and maintain this  information is more than ever before. This is where the Operance app provides real value to the industry and helps guarantee the safety of anyone who enters or lives in these buildings.

We continuously focus our research and development efforts on this, ensuring that the Golden Thread can be executed to its true potential and that buildings are as safe as possible.

But it’s important to be open and transparent, as we say to our customers, there is as of today not one piece of software that provides the full ‘golden thread solution’. How can there be?!

Whilst the government have made the Building Safety Act law, there is still a lot of clarification required; such as, what information is requested at each gateway during the design and construction phase and what information is to be provided and maintained during the occupation phase. We also have yet to see how that information will be used for fire safety and for the benefit of occupants.

Therefore, housing associations, local authorities and anyone else researching and engaging with vendors should be very clear as to what they are being sold, specifically when vendors and/or consultants are marketing themselves as a ‘golden thread solution’.

At Operance we are simply dedicated to continuously designing and building our platform in line with the latest regulations and recommendations, to become a solution to the golden thread – the difference is clear and very important!

As we see it, there are two types of software relating to the golden thread on the market today, that you could put in one of two pots;

  1. Legacy Technology: existing software solutions that are attempting to add on, plug-in or pivot to provide golden thread features onto their platform.
  2. New Technology: new software solutions that are designing and building software from scratch in line with both the design and construction phase and occupation phases.

When speaking with vendors, ask yourself, which pot would you pot them in?

We are firmly in Pot 2; with the ambition to continue working with the government, industry experts, housing associations and other clients and contractors to develop a real solution to defining, curating, accessing and maintaining the Golden Thread.

You can find out more about our software and how we are continuously evolving it here.

In Summary

The Grenfell tragedy affected the lives of many and will never be forgotten for that reason. We hold the events of those affected close to our hearts and appreciate that no matter what, the damage cannot be undone. All we can focus on now is how to prevent it from happening again, and we hope that today’s article has helped provide an insight into this.

Whilst it may seem not a lot has changed in the 5-years since the Grenfell Disaster, please take a second to acknowledge the visionaries, the practitioners, the early adopters, the experts and the changemakers that give up their free time to participate in initiatives such as those mentioned above to try and create change. They don’t always agree, you might not always agree with them, but they are doing something great, they are trying to create change for good. Because of this, Operance we will always support them and do everything we can to support them, for it is them that will drive that change because they are the ones that believe they can.

You, yourself can be one, get involved in an initiative, or simply help by providing your own thoughts. For instance, you could respond to the government’s request for your views on Higher Risk Buildings: Click here.

Either way, the best way to predict the future, is to invent it. The best way to drive change, is to help make the change you want to see. Get involved and together we can all help prevent another Grenfell from happening.

Meet Our New Inbound Marketing Manager: Conor Smart

We would like to welcome our new Inbound Marketing Manager, Conor Smart to Operance! Working closely with our product marketing manager and the sales department, Conor is looking forward to being a part of the business long term, helping us grow our online revenue.

We interviewed Conor about his first week at Operance, have a read of his responses below.

How has your first week been?

It’s been great. I was anxious before starting the role because I was coming from a larger brand in a different industry. Regardless, I am glad I made the leap because I have more responsibility and feel more valued. The vision, Operance, and the team; it’s been incredible and more than I expected.

Did you feel involved in your first week?

Yes, even though we all work remotely, we are such a small team that talks every day which I feel is vital.

Is there anything we could have done to make your first week more enjoyable?

I think I would have enjoyed staying in Hull a bit longer, purely because we all get along so well. Other than that, there is nothing I would change; the entire week was a blast!

What’s exciting you the most about moving forwards?

The overall vision of the company is what excites me the most. I am really impressed by the current progress it’s unbelievable. I am so proud to be working for a company like Operance that provides a product that makes a genuine difference.

What Does the Inbound Marketing Role entail?

As the inbound marketing manager for Operance, my responsibilities include managing all promotional marketing activities to increase brand awareness and improve sales for the software solutions we offer. I use data analysis to determine what platforms are best to target our audience and what type of marketing activity we should run to improve lead generation and brand growth.

I work closely with the product marketing manager to establish a consistent tone of voice and the sales team to increase our lead generation month-by-month. Working closely with sales and product teams is vital to support the growth of Operance and achieving financial targets.

How do you plan to make an impact on the product, our users and our business?

I plan on making an impact by developing; high-converting, cost-effective marketing campaigns that boost our product sales and customer base. I will work closely with the product marketing manager to develop the organic marketing mediums such as social, SEO, email and website to improve our cost per acquisition and performance metrics.

Using a combination of data analysis and sales/product feedback, I will strategically plan and execute marketing campaigns that improve the financial performance and brand recognition of Operance. I will also outline a strategy to target new markets both in the UK and globally to improve our market share.

Have our behaviours and attitudes been what you thought they would be?

Absolutely, everyone has been really welcoming! There hasn’t been too much pressure throughout the induction period. It’s been well organised and allowed me to discover the role and shape it properly. I feel like this environment enables me to be more productive. The communication with the sales department has also been a big bonus!

What drew you to the role?

What drew me to Operance was the start-up, fast-growth mindset that the team had combined with a new and innovative product that could change the construction industry.

What do you enjoy doing outside of Operance?

I enjoy playing golf, travelling and investing in my spare time. I have been lucky enough to travel to various destinations around the world, and look forward to travelling to many more.

That concludes our interview with Conor! We would like to once again wish him a warm welcome to the business. We look forward to working with him on a long term basis and are excited to see what the future brings with him onboard.

We would like to welcome our new Sales Executive, Max Risby to the Operance family. Working closely with our marketing department and Chief Product Officer; Max is looking forward to helping us grow our current markets and venture into new markets that may present true demand for our products and services.

We interviewed Max about his first week at Operance and what he’s looking forward to the most about joining the business. Have a read below.

Hey Max, have you felt welcome and involved?

Quis autem vel eum iure reprehenderit qui in ea voluptate velit esse quam nihil molestiae consequatur, vel illum qui dolorem eum fugiat quo voluptas nulla pariatur.

Hey Max, have you felt welcome and involved?

I honestly can’t think of anything that could have made the week any better, and that is all down to the culture and planning here at Operance. When you first start any new position in a company, there is always a level of anticipation of what to expect, and it honestly has exceeded expectations.

‘That’s really good to hear Max! We’re glad you enjoyed your time with us in good old Hull!’

What are you most excited about moving forwards?

I’m mainly looking forward to unlocking the business’s full potential and seeing how much we can grow together. I am sure we can all agree that the potential growth is almost endless, which I think is down to our product’s value and position in the market. I am also excited to learn everything I can from you and the rest of the team because everyone has so much knowledge to share with each other.

What was it that drew you to the role?

I have always wanted to work for a brand that is relatively new with a modern approach to business. The solutions available at Operance have a clear value and provide true benefits to the market. I have previously worked for a multitude of software companies and have a passion for technology and digital products.

When I was able to secure an interview and meet Scott; it was refreshing to see that the business’ five-year plan aligned with my own five-year plan which meant that it was a win-win situation for everyone. Since having this original thought, I have enjoyed every minute thus far and long may it continue!

Is the role what you thought it would be?

It is still early stages, but so far it is exactly what I thought it would be, if not more! I feel a lot more comfortable than I thought I would at the end of the week, and the responsibilities align with what I agree is vital to the role.

What do you enjoy doing outside of Operance?

Outside of Operance, I am an avid football enthusiast and play for a local team. I was playing at a semi-professional level until around two years ago and have supported Manchester United most of my life. When I am not doing anything sport-related, I like to keep it simple, watch Netflix, cook good food and have a stress free life!

Meet Our New Senior Developer – Mohamed Mohamed

Mohamed Mohamed joins our growing software development team as our new Senior Developer. Working with our Chief Technology Officer Tim Mutlow, Mohamed cannot wait to get stuck into developing and improving our technology.

After developing his coding skills for a decade, Mohamed now takes on his first full-time developer role at Operance.

We caught up with him to learn more about his background and what he’s looking forward to most about joining Operance.

Hey Mohamed, how have you found your first few weeks at Operance?

At the moment, it’s only my second week as a Senior Developer.

I’ve just been finding my feet and getting familiar with everything – the code base, the structure of how things are run and the overall architecture of the app.

What’s your background, and how did this lead to working with us?

I started my journey into programming around ten years ago – all self-taught. I taught myself how to develop native apps, websites and some backend tech, all while working and running my family restaurant.

While working at the restaurant with my brothers, I took on some freelance work, some side projects and contracts here and there to try and develop my skills and keep up to date.

Nine years later and I wanted to jump into a full-time role. The restaurant was fun while it lasted, but this is my true calling.

I’ve lived in Canada and Dubai, and I’ve now moved to the UK as I start this new chapter in my life.

‘Wow! That’s quite the change. We hope you don’t hate the rainy weather over here too much.’

I do quite like the rain, actually. I like the gloominess of it – it’s my kind of vibe. I’ve wanted to live in the UK since I was a kid, so it’s pretty cool everything lined up for me to get this role.

What was it that drew you to the role?

It was the tech – Operance uses Flutter, and I’ve been using it for the past four years. Ever since Flutter came out, I’ve been drawn to it and wanted to start learning and mastering it.

However, there are not a lot of Flutter jobs out there, so when I saw that Operance used the framework, I immediately applied for the Senior Developer role.

What are you most looking forward to about working at Operance?

I’ve always found construction interesting but never had the opportunity to work in the industry, so this was a perfect opportunity to learn something new.

It’s going to be a pretty cool adventure. I’m a guy from Canada getting a job in the UK and changing his whole life.

Also, to get a first full-time job with a platform that I actually love using is great.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Well outside of Operance, I like to dabble in cooking and learn new tech. I also enjoy going on 3-7 hour trips with friends and family, visiting new places and trying new food. I will drive for 7 hours for a drink and a bagel to Montreal any day!

Aside from amazing food and tech, I enjoy playing Tetris and occasionally take on side gigs like websites or graphic design work just to keep my other skills in use, and broaden my skillset.
